Welcome to the initial version of the DC Interfaith Peace Initiative website. Its purpose is to give the Initiative, or DCIPI, a basic presence on the internet; to provide some basic information about the vision, mission, inspiration, and early activities of the group; and invite you to contact us with any comments, questions or suggestions you may have.
Please visit the site regularly. It is Under Construction at all times, and with the busy autumn season of religious holidays and festivals upon us, we expect to be busy ourselves, and to post news here that reflects that activity. In its maturity, this site will likely take on a different appearance, as its look and feel evolve along with its content. But for the present, this version will share our basic message.
Thank you for your attention!
The D.C. Interfaith Peace Initiative is committed to promoting peace and harmony among people of all faiths and beliefs. We strive to bring a greater awareness of the bonds and values that join us together as one humanity sharing a common experience. We work to raise consciousness through purposeful dialogue, collaborative social action and ethical education, and to explore and support spiritual sources of inspiration and joyful celebration among faith communities. We seek to build a culture of understanding, justice, and peace.
We work in the field of interfaith hosting events providing opportunities to learn more about the many faith traditions in the Washington Metropolitan area. And there are moments that arise from time to time when we can invite others to share in this quest to know more about these beautiful spiritual traditions within our own community.... in a most enjoyable way!
SHARING RAMADAN
Wednesday, September 9, 2009
Busboys and Poets, Washington, DC location, 14th and V Streets NW
Doors will open at 6:30 pm ~ Please arrive promptly! There will be an opportunity for Muslims to offer Salat Prayers and for non-Muslims to learn their meaning and significance. No alcohol will be served and all food served will be halal. Imam Johari will read from the Quran and tell the story of how Mohammad, may peace be upon him, received the Quran. The traditonal "azaan," or call to prayer, will be chanted for the breaking of the fast at 7:27 PM with water and dates. Another "azaan" will be chanted to bring those that wish to pray on stage behind curtains for privacy. Then - we're doing something that has never been done before at any Iftar - In absolute SILENCE, a beautiful Power Point Presentation about Ramadan will be presented that will also include the transliteration and translation of the SALAT PRAYERS for non-Muslims to respectfully contemplate silently during the moments of prayer. And then, of course, a delicious HALAL dinner will be served ~ A dinner selection for our vegan guests is offered also. With the addition of a stimulating interfaith panel discussion, musical interludes and plenty of time for enjoying fellowship with one another, it should prove to be an evening to remember! The menu is fixed price at $26, with some scholarship aid available. Please help support this wonderful effort by sharing this message with all of your friends and family and anyone you know who would be interested in attending this special event ~ unique to the Washington metropolitan communities!
We look forward to welcoming you on Wednesday, September 9th! ~ Asalam Alaykum, Shalom, Om Shanti, Peace Be With You ~
